This was my first Holland America experience. I was thoroughly impressed. The Volendam is an older ship, but is also very well maintained and a very intimate vessel. The food was probably the best I have had on a cruise in a long time. The Pinnacle grill was amazing. We also ate at Canaletto which is their Italian restaurant only open for dinner (no extra cost, but reservations required). I had their spaghetti and cannot quit thinking about it! We had an oceanview cabin and it was very spacious. The entertainment was also very impressive. The service was wonderful. The overall ambiance of the ship was comforting. We only sailed for 3 days before disembarking in Skagway to begin the land portion of our trip. I was so impressed with Holland America for our 9 days on land. Our tour conductor was top notch, and the transportation was excellent (transfers, our motorcoaches, trains, etc.) All of the hotels/resorts we stayed at were very nice and the rooms were all very spacious and clean. Our favorite overnight stay was the Westmark Hotel in Tok, Alaska! What a great staff that hotel has. They were holding their Christmas in July. It was one of the most memorable experiences of our trip. Denali National Park was not only mammoth, but was awe inspiring. The scenery and wildlife was unforgettable. I highly recommend Holland America whether you are looking for a cruise only or a cruise tour. You will not be disappointed. |
